Wild Couple | DRAMA, ROMANCE | Full Movie in English
♪ [intense music] ♪ Buck! Buck Buck! Come on, come on.
Get up! Get up! Is Charlie okay? I really think I should be
asking you that question. I’m no expert but I
think it’s the fire we need to outrun now! The wind’s changed
direction. We gotta get out of here. Come on! Come on! Arrgghh! What’s wrong? It’s my leg. It’s definitely
a bad sprain. May be broken. We need a new plan. We’re not going
to outrun this. I can’t outrun this. [ducks quacking] [Martin] Thank you, Captain. I really appreciate
the lift. Must be great living
in a place like this? Yes sir. Born and raised out here. I come from a long line of
forest rangers and bush pilots. Wow. So you come by that
stubble honestly. It’s been a busy season
for brush fires so I haven’t had much time to renew
my shaving club membership. [chuckles] Yeah, yeah! Hold on. Huh? [Buck] You should stay for some
fishing. Best in the state. [Martin]
Course it is. [Buck] Hopefully going
with my cousin Amara. But the season
isn’t over yet. Mr Lamont.
Good to see you sir. Thank you, Stanley. We got everything
set up for you. I’m sorry, I didn’t
catch your name? Buck Thompson. Forest supervisor,
and pilot today for our esteemed guest here. Stanley Garson,
project manager. [Stanley] Just this way,
sir, up around the bend. [Stanley] The stability report
definitely supports my analytics for the
rehabilitation of the mine. That’s good. You’re resurrecting
the mine here? Well not so much
rehabilitate, as to lay claim to. You claim the mining rights
and therefore the land. Think about it. Who wants to buy the land when for a few dollars a
year and some soil samples you can file the
land claim without all the taxes and
sunk in capital. Land claims. That’s pretty old fashioned
thinking for a tech guy. It’s right out of Warren
Buffet’s playbook, really. “Last puff of the
cigar” kind of thing. We’re just waiting for two
more helicopter loads and then we can start
the crew bunker builds. You know another old
fashioned notion that a lot of
us locals know, is that this mine was
closed down because a major fault line
was discovered here. Might be pretty dangerous
for a crew this size. That can’t be right, I mean, I… I ah… It seems it’s possible that my numbers
might be a bit off. Well, if we can’t move it, we’ll just have to send
all these people home. Well we did lay claim to
several thousand acres. Oh, great.
We’ll just move it. Maybe over the next ridge. There’s an abandoned
ranger station. Might save you
some of that money on temporary shelter
builds for the crew. Sounds good.
Let’s go there. I can run you up
there right now. Perfect! All right people, listen up! Change of plans.
We’re moving the site. Pack everything up! [tractor back up beeping] [liquid gushing] [Buck on radio]
Hey Amara. I’m still on charter. Can you grab my fishing
tackle from Mom’s? [Amara on radio]
Copy that. [door closes] Hey Aunt Janine. Buck asked me to pick up
his fishing rod for him. Oh! So now he’s sending you to
avoid coming to see me? No. He’s doing a private
charter for Roma this morning. Some wealthy tech dude needs
to go to the upper lake. Well, I have phoned
him several times. And he has yet
to call me back. It has been all hands on
deck at the ranger station. Well. Perhaps I’m just feeling
a little out of the loop. To be honest, I’m
struggling a bit, not being part of
the day to day. Really because that stuff
looks pretty day to day. I’ve been compiling some data
so you guys have the time to keep watch for real danger. After my overseas tours I went straight into
the ranger station. I got to work with you
and my kids everyday. For years. I just never realized
how much I’d miss it. Well at least we’re all
in the same city now. I do hope Buck is up
for some family time. I know when he’s avoiding
me that something is up. Well listen, if
you need anything, anything at all,
reach out. All right? I’m good for much more
than muffin service. [laughs] Thanks Chief! [Martin]
You’re ex-Army, right? [Buck]
Afghanistan. Two tours. [Martin]
Afghanistan! Me too. Actually my nephew. Really wonderful kid.
Terrific. [Buck] I bet. It was
an honor to serve. I’m sure your nephew
feels the same. The ranger station
should work for you. It’s been empty for years. [Buck]
Yeah, just right over here. [Charlie barks viciously] Whoa! [Charlie continues barking] [Jessica]
Charlie, it’s okay. You did a good job buddy.
[Dog whines] You’re okay. Hey, are you okay?
[Charlie growling] [Buck]
Yeah, I’m fine. I mean, he’s just
protective of me. [Charlie barks] You could have knocked! We just landed a plane
which is usually enough of a warning. This place has
been vacant since my Grandfather
was posted here. Well as you can see, this
place has been occupied by me and Charlie here
for several months. I’m completing a
research grant. I’m in my final stages
of a dissertation on the Proterozoic eon of
the Precambrian… Studying layers of rocks. You could have
just said that. This place is perfect, Buck. Wait, I’m sorry.
Perfect for what? [Martin]
My new venture. I’m Martin Lamont. The ML Intercontinental Group. Okay… I’m Jessica. That’s my pilot, Buck. Well, I’ll be outside. Martin! That’s the… [Martin]
That’s the bathroom. So it appears that that
man and his backers have secured all the local
mining and land claims and intend to mine all the resources
with their new technology in order to line their
bank accounts. He is not a man. He is an intercontinental
corporation. Yeah. [scoffs] I’m going to
look into it. At least give you a timeline. Look, I’m really sorry. I had no idea that
you were set up here. Last time I was out here was
years ago when my Dad and I flew in to go brook trout
fishing with my Grandfather. I didn’t want anybody
to lose their jobs. There’s not a lot
of work around here. Well if this project
falls through, I have to inform my
researchers in town that they don’t
have jobs anymore. Look, Buck, is it? Thank you. I think you’ve done
enough for today. Come here Charlie. Come. By the way. I do like dogs. [Jessica] Well that still
doesn’t help me in any way. He is cute, though. But not as cute as you. [Amara] I absolutely told you that was that
billionaire dude! You could have asked
for just about anything to fly him around. Maybe I should have but I not the type of guy to
rip folks off, cousin. Billionaires aren’t “folks”. They’re people who know
the value of everything but the price of nothing. I think that’s the
other way around. Whatever.
[thunder rumbling] Oh, looks like we’ll have a
lot of lightning rolling in with the storm today. [Amara] I have Luis
up in the tower watching for any
fires that spark. [Buck]
The Cessna needs a tune-up. And radio upgrade. All those water dumps on the
Athens tract blaze wore her out. Let’s hope that was the
biggest fire this year. Hey, can you get
me the main number to the State
Forestry Department? There’s one of their tenants
that I want to look into. O-kay? I was up at the old
Mumford Ranger Station. There’s a geologist
working there. She might be losing
her excavation site to Mr Warbucks, so… Oh! A she? Buck Thompson, I can feel
you blushing from here! Hey, Couz… I don’t blush. Okay. But I’ll make you a deal. I’ll get you that number
if you talk to your Mom. Aunt Janine says you haven’t
even been returning her calls. Deal. But are you sure she’s
not returning my calls? Yeah, I’m sure. Fine. [phone beeps off]
Cool. [Martin on phone] Yeah, I’m
going to pull the plug here. I’ve got Stanley already running
the numbers on the new site. [Martin] Hey Stanley, can we
regroup back in town. Somewhere with less…
Nature. I agree. We should head
back into town. The wind’s starting to
blow up and reports say that lightning
is coming in. I can take you two. Great. Hey Martin. Is there any way that
you can let Jessica stay and complete her studies? Eee… You know I would
really like to help out. My lawyers are right in
front of me on this one. They’ve already
severed her lease. So, my hands are tied.
Okay? Stanley! Of course they are. I’ll meet you guys
back at the plane. [Abi]
Could there be a mistake? Maybe there’s some
confusion about the site? No. I highly doubt it. A forest ranger named “Buck”,
of all things, pointed out that this location would
be a great substitute. At first they were trying
to build at that mine on the fault line. Hey, I met “Buck” at the
firefighters’ auction. I think he might have
actually been up for auction that night. His sister Roma
says he one of the most eligible
bachelors in town. Well, I already
emailed the State, hoping all that pro
bono work we did will buy us some
good favor. [message beep]
And it did not. Jess, I think I’m going
to leave you to it. Let me know if you want me
to fly in and help pack up. No, it’s okay. Let’s just wait it out. Maybe this tech guy’s short
attention span will take him on to the next big scheme and
leave us to our research. Let’s hope. See ya. Bye. What kind of name
is Buck anyway? Buck Thompson… Okay wait.
What am I doing? [phone buzzing] Well hello stranger. Hey Ma. How’re you doing? Catch many fish this week? I catch more fish than the
rest of you put together. Sounds like a challenge. Well if you come to the
remembrance dinner, I’ll get you out in the boat
and we can see about that. Thank you for the
invitation, but… I’m training a group out
of town that weekend. You don’t think this gathering
would be a bit helpful? [Janine]
I’m worried about you. Your cousin and sister tell me
you haven’t been sleeping. You know that I don’t need to
be in a room full of veterans to remember. I remember my time
overseas every day. You can talk to me, Buck. I have a client, Mom.
I got to go. [door banging] [door bangs closed]
Thank you. [thunder rumbling] [thunder rumbling] [lightning sizzling] [thunder cracking,
lightning zapping] Oh man. Amara to Buck. Amara! I just dropped Martin and
his minion off at their cars and they are heading
back into town. Good. Out of harm’s way. Glad you’re not flying in
this electrical storm. You know I hate thunder
storms as much as you do. What’s up? Ah, I see smoke rising. [Buck]
How bad? [Amara]
Hard to tell. Looks like it’s near
Martin’s initial site. [Buck] The forest is too
dry right now. Any fire’s going
to spread fast. [explosion] [Buck]
What was that? You’d better get back quick. I think that was some
kind of an explosion. You’d better sound the alarm
and call the volunteers. I’ll be back in
thirty minutes. I need to fuel up and then I
will be back in the air to help out. [fire crackling] [Buck on radio]
Buck returning to base. I can confirm that all crew
from the construction site have been evacuated. Jessica! [Buck on radio] Buck to base 5
ranger station. Do you read me? Over. No thank you.
[clicks off] Buck to Jessica, come in. Buck to base 5
ranger station. Do you read me? Over. Buck to base 5
ranger station. Amara? If anyone can hear me, I’m
turning back to retrieve a woman from the old
Mumford Ranger Station. Out. [plane motor in distance]
[Charlie barks] Charlie. [plane motor getting closer] What does he want? If he thinks he can just
come here and apologize, well I don’t think so. I’m with you Charlie.
Let’s let him grovel a bit. [phone buzzing] Buck. Amara! Are you all right? I’m okay. The fire’s
spreading fast. It’s already about
a mile around. [Buck]
I saw from the air. Just get back
here in one piece. [static] Hello? The geologist. I’m going to pick her up
and I’ll be right there. [static] You’re where? The geolo…! Ah! [Charlie barks] Down! Miss Alaway… Look, I know why you’re
here, and honestly it’s fine. We’ll just move locations.
No need to apologize… Jessica!
I’m not here to apologize. There’s a forest
fire and we need to evacuate you immediately! -What?
-There’s not much time! We need to get you
and Charlie out! I I need my things!
I need to… No, leave it!
We have to go! This is my work! [Jessica] There’s some food
on the counter. Haven’t you ever
heard of the cloud? Really! Jokes? Now! We need to go now! Okay. Charlie! Charlie come with me.
Let’s go! [Buck] She’s going to
want this hard drive. [Buck] Follow that path!
The plane’s at the dock. [Buck]
Oh no! [explosion] Let’s go. Charley come on! Charlie! Go go go! Go go go! This way. The old logging road doesn’t
go through to the town but it should get us away
from these flames. Thank you. Okay. If I’d left
everything behind, it would have set
me back five years. I imagine you getting
killed would be a lot worse for
your research. I’m trying my best. Okay? I’m sorry. I’ve seen too many people
lose the fight to the flames. I intend that not
to be us today. Watch out! Yes, I know. I can drive! [Amara on radio]
Base 5 to Roma… Your brother estimated it
to be about a mile wide twenty minutes ago. So we can only assume
it’s doubled since. How fast can you
get airborne? [Roma] I’m two minutes
from take off. We’re fueled up
and ready to go. I’m going to drop a
line of fire retardant between the fire and
the ranger station. [Roma]
All right. I want smoke
jumpers ready to go! We’re not going to let
this one get out of hand. Got it? Go! Charlie’s warming
up to you at least. Oh come on, he’s
too cute to resist. It’s not Charlie. I have a history with dogs. I served with them overseas. It’s hard for me to see
them in civilian life. Take this. Here. [Amara on radio]
Base 5 ranger tower to Buck. Come in Buck. Where are you, Buck? We need backup. [ringing dial tone] Aunt Janine. It’s Amara.
We have a situation. I need your help.
Call me back a-sap. Oh no! What? -Come on!
-What? My phone! I must of dropped it loading up
all this really important stuff. Here. Take mine. Take it! [ringing dial tone] I’m sorry. I’m mad at myself. Okay? I’m trained to be calm
in situations like this. Yeah, I can see that. [out of service beeps] There’s no connection. What? The fire must’ve taken out
the nearest cell tower. [tree creaking] [Buck]
Watch out! [tree creaking, smashing] [brakes squeal]
[crashing] [Roma]
I have a visual on the camp. I’m going to drop
a line behind it, buy everyone a little time
until the ground rescue unit comes in. Okay? [Amara on radio]
Copy that Roma. [Camp Counselor Jake]
All right everyone. Just like the
drills we practiced. Head into the main mess. [Amara on radio] Once
you make that drop, we’ll need you to head
to the upper ridge. [Amara on radio]
You’re the best, Roma. Never forget it.
[chuckles] [Roma] Circling back to
the upper ridge. Ground crews
might be flagging. [Jessica panting] [Buck]
Are you okay? [Jessica] I think so.
Are you? [Buck] Banged up.
But nothing broken. [Jessica]
Wait! Where’s Charlie? Charlie! -Charlie!
-Charlie! Come! Why would he
have jumped out? He’s usually so protective.
He never leaves my side. Dogs are primal. They know how to
get to safety. Charlie! Here. This way. [Buck]
Charlie! [Jessica]
Charlie! Come here boy.
Charlie! Shhh. [Charlie whining] [Jessica]
He’s afraid. We have to snap
him out of it. Make him focus on us. Come! Come! [Jessica]
Come here. Oh Charlie, you scared me. You scared me. K-9 unit? Let’s get back to
finding safety. Come on Charlie. Come on.
Let’s go. Let’s go. -Good boy.
-Come on. Let’s go. Charlie. Charlie.
You scared me boy. [Buck] Come on! [Jeep engine sputtering] Come on! [Jessica]
Augh! [Jeep engine sputtering] [Buck]
Are you okay? I think so.
My ribs are a little tender. I think I have
something for the pain. No no. It’s okay.
I’ll be all right. [Jessica struggles] [engine hissing] But this Jeep’s not
going anywhere. Come on. Thank you. I hope you like hiking. Because it’s our
only chance now. But I think we made
some good distance between us and the fire. Okay well, you
know these forests. Just point us in
the right direction and Charlie and I
will lead the way. Just a wild guess but, you
like to be in charge, huh? I wouldn’t say I
like being in charge. I just usually end up being
in charge through people failing before me. Not sure how I
should take that. Charlie come.
Shall we? We shall.
But we’re going this way. Okay. Boss the second. Who’s the first? Charlie, of course! Well we’re on foot now. We need to get to a radio. My family has an
old hunting cabin. It’s the best chance we have but it’s about
a 16 mile hike. [Buck]
You up for it? What? Are you sure we should
be traveling that far from where we came from? Won’t people be
looking for you by now? Maybe even me. You’re right. But I’m not sure if Roma and the
aerials can contain this fire. It might have already spread
to the tract of this forest. With no Jeep, the only way we’re going to get
through this is that cabin. This is now
officially a rescue. Okay. Let’s go. Up in Wayne Forest today,
our firefighters just can’t seem
to catch a break. If you’ve been outside
you’ve seen that it’s gusting from a couple
of different directions. So no surprise, this
latest bush fire seems to have a
mind of it’s own. Our brave rangers have been
evacuating residents all day. But with two
counties left to go, they won’t be getting
much sleep tonight. Let’s pray for rain and for the safety of
our first responders. Now for some good news
coming out of this fire. All of our little summer
campers are safe and sound. Thank you, Captain Roma
Thompson, head of the aerial fire fighting squad for
leading that charge. I’m Amber Thorne and I’m
reporting to you live from the ranger station. [Buck]
So, why rocks? Of all subjects you
could have chose. [Jessica] Are you
knocking my life’s work? I’m just curious. I’ve never met a
geologist before. Well, the simple reason is I
like following the clues of what the Earth
was like before. Like where lakes
and volcanoes were. I like learning
from the past. It tells us a lot about now. [Buck]
That’s the simple version? [Jessica chuckles] What’s the complex reason? My parents are artists. Mom’s a photographer, Dad’s
a watercolor painter. They raised me and my
brother in the city, which I love. Always something to do, always other kids to play with. But…? But, they love the country just as much as
they love the city. So on weekends and summers, they would take us to
these wild green places. They’d work a bit,
we’d have a picnic. You know, they never
complained about putting two little muddy kids in the
backseat of their car. [Buck]
Mud equals fun in my world. [Jessica chuckles]
Yeah. Look. I’m really sorry about
getting defensive earlier. I’m working on a few things. That’s okay. I’m sorry too. From now on, I will embrace
having two captains. [Charlie barks] Make that three. Good. Hey look, if we need to do a
few more miles, I can do it. I’m good. Okay. Okay. Come on Charlie. Okay, do you think
she is still at the old Mumford
Ranger Station? For sure not. She’s used to
living in the woods. And she has her truck. I think her and Charlie would be
trying to outrun the fire. I hope not! The fire has gone
way past that ridge. The damage is extensive. Well, I’ll let you know if
she sends me a message. [Amara] She is on the ground
crew’s missing list. I should be
getting an update within the next
couple of hours. We’ll let you know. Okay. I will… I’ll stand by. [Amara’s phone buzzes]
Hey, Chief. [Janine]
Hey. Get me up to speed. [Amara] This fire broke out
about three hours ago. I put the forward
rate of spread at three to four
miles per hour. Where’s Buck?
He was out there. I… lost contact with him. How long ago? What was his last
known location? He called.
It was really static-y. I couldn’t get
his coordinates. He’s supposed to give
you that first off. What was he thinking? He might not have been
thinking clearly. They were doing an eviction. She was at the old
Mumford Ranger Station. Oh. So there’s a girl involved? There may be. All right.
So he’s a man in uniform. And if they are up by the
old Mumford Ranger Station, that means they’re making
their way to the hunting cabin. I’ll have Roma meet them. [Janine]
No. No. We need Roma in the air and we can’t afford to
take any of her team away. But, if he’s headed there… If he’s headed there,
he’ll get there. And when he does he’ll radio
us and I’ll go pick him up. Understood. How soon before the
ground unit gets in? I can have them there
in eight minutes. Great. Great. I’ll meet them
on the highway and take them
through the back. That way they can draw from
the lake, push the fire back. That’s a great plan. I’ll let them know
you’re on your way. [Amara] I got to get up in the
air. I can’t just sit here. [Janine] Well let me know
what you see. And stay safe. You too. The fire’s bringing
the trees down, especially with this wind. [Amara]
Eight minutes! [Jessica]
Owwww. [Buck]
We have to make camp soon. No, it’s okay. I’m fine. Jessica, you’re not fine. Don’t even think
about babying me! You got banged
up in the car. You don’t see me
cooing over you. Okay. Let’s just take
a few minutes break. And let me clean this up. That looks really bad. It’s just a scratch. Look at you. You remembered to bring a
first aid kit, nature boy. I grew up in my Mom’s house
and I know the basics. Sounds like she was
strict about that. She used to send me into
the woods overnight with nothing but a pocket knife
and a first aid kit. How old were you? Not very. That was her way of
showing me that she cared. Here, I’ll…
I’ll help you. Though I am no expert
in the medical field, ironically I am a doctor. A rock doctor? No, I have my PhD. I’m a doctor of science. Officially, Doctor of Philosophy
in Geological Sciences. Okay doctor science, before you hurt yourself
with any more letters behind your name,
night’s coming. We need to find shelter. At the base of the mountain
there is a bunch of rock formations that could
maybe give us some shelter. Would that work? I guess all that
research of yours has some practical
use after all. Well actually, I have a whole
bunch of papers and diplomas that could keep a
fire going all night. Okay, show off. Let’s head for the hills. Okay. So, what next Charlie? [barks and growls happily] [Jessica laughs] If you say so boss. [laughs] No. Come on. [Buck] Okay. We’re going
to need a fire. Well, the wind’s died
down here, at least. That’s a nice find, doc. You said your cabin is on the other side of
this mountain, right? Yeah. What if we go
through the cave? It could literally
save us hours. I don’t know.
I’ve never tried. But with your
ribs and my arm, we should stick to
the path I know. Old school tracking. Yeah, old school sounds a
lot like stubborn to me. I suppose it does. But with the fire the way
it is, we can’t risk it. This fire’s not
slowing down. How long on that
ground unit? Transporting them
in as we speak. Mom! Amara brought you out
of retirement huh? Ah! Retirement is a bit
of a myth, darling. A mother’s work
is never done. We’re happy to have
you back, Chief. Oh and don’t dump any of
that red stuff on my truck. I just washed it. No promises. [fire crackles feriously] [Buck] Dinner is
just about done. I don’t want to put down your
academic way of life, Jessica, but us mountain folk,
we always cover the basics. Shelter. Water. And we always hunt for food. And when did you
have time to hunt? In the old Mumford
Ranger Station. I hunted it in the
wilds of your fridge. [chuckles]
Okay. Well, I guess then I
provided the shelter, the water,
and the food. True. But I am a great cook,
and you’re injured so you can’t leave me behind. Thank you. Okay. I am going to go soak this
in the river that we passed. It’s not ice but
it is cold enough. It’ll help with
the swelling and make you feel
more comfortable. No, Buck, please.
Eat first. No ma’am.
You come first. Buck. Please. Eat. Fine. Five minutes.
And then I go. Well, I don’t think we’ll be
getting much sleep tonight. Here Charlie. [Buck]
Speak for yourself. Looks like Charlie is tired
enough to sleep in a puddle. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] It’s nice to hear you laugh. I thought you might have
broken your funny bone. Oh, well, laughing’s overrated when you’ve hurt your ribs. Plus, I think I just needed
to hear something funny. Do you not know
how jokes work? Apparently not. [Jessica laughs] [Amara on radio]
This is Amara. Just dropped water
on the south fire. I’ll reload and go
for another pass. [Amara on radio]
Buck. Buck. You out there? Where are you, Buck? I need you to be okay. [Roma] We cut the fire
off in the east. Thanks for the assist, Mom. If you didn’t predict how
the winds would change, we would all be battling
in different directions. [Janine]
Oh please. We both know it’s the heroic
men and women down there doing all the heavy lifting. [Janine]
It’s a young folks’ game. Take the compliment. How are the other
rangers holding up? Beat up. They’re tired from
loading up the sandbags. Well, I’ll pick up the
sandbags and run ‘em down to the team when they
need resupplies. Speaking of resupplies,
I’m heading back. [Roma]
Any word from Buck? [Amara] There’s no sign
of Buck, just yet. No he’s probably hanging
out in some safe zone. His training would
have taught him that. You and Uncle Walt
taught us all that. [Amara] Okay, I’m circling back. Gotta relieve the new guy. [Jessica]
Hey look. I’m so sorry you had
to come rescue me. Your parents must
be worried sick. My Mom’s too tough
to be scared. Dad’s not with us anymore. Oh, I’m so sorry. Yeah, he passed. And he fought hard. Never gave up. He was stronger than
all of us put together. You know my Mom, she didn’t
tell me when the end came. I didn’t get to
say goodbye to him. I still can’t get past that. And every day, I think about
all the things that I want to tell him that I did or saw. Still light a
candle for him. Every Sunday. Of course. I’m sure he’s still
watching over you. He definitely wasn’t
watching over me when I made this food. I am so sorry.
This is garbage. [laughs] Look, I didn’t want
to say anything. You should have.
-[Charlie growls] You were so proud. Not even raccoons
would like that. [Charlie barks loudly] [Jessica]
What’s that? [bear growling] Sounds like it
might be a bear. [Charlie barking] [Jessica]
We have to get out of here. [bear snorting and growling] You’re going to pack
up your stuff, quietly. We’re going to go back the
way we came and circle around. I think if we go
through this crevasse we could there
just as quick. Maybe even quicker. The deeper into that
cave and we’ll find the rest of the
bear family. I read Goldilocks. [bear growls] [Jessica]
Charlie come. I know this is your
area, but look, the smoke is
flowing this way. There is a passage
through here. [Buck]
Jessica, don’t move. [bear panting] Run. [bear roaring feriously] -Run!
-Charlie, come! Run! [sizzling] [bear growling] There’s more air flowing
through this passage! Jessica! Come on! This is the way out! -I can see the light.
-Trust me! [bear growling] Charlie, come on! Charlie, come! [Buck] You were right
about the short cut. There’s the trail to
the cabin right there. [Jessica]
Are you okay? I mean, it must be super embarrassing
I found your camp for you. You think my ego’s
that fragile? [Jessica chuckles] I have a sister.
She still beats me up. Amara, I’m sure
Buck is just fine. You focus on your crew. One: Buck is my crew. And two: Why hasn’t he
reached the radio yet? A 16 mile hike is a walk
in the park for him. Tell Roma to buzz
by the cabin again. If she sees any sign of them,
we’ll take it from there. Copy that. I’ve known you long enough
to know when you’ve got something to say,
so let’s have it. Janine, you have literally
raised me like one of your own. And I am so grateful
for everything. It’s okay to do your job and
be worried for your son. I know he’s capable, and I know if anyone can
get out safe, it’s him. But I’m still scared. And I’ve played
enough poker with you to know when you’re bluffing. I’m scared to death, Amara. But I’m trying to
keep it together. So I can help him, help
everyone out there. If you can’t keep
a cool head, it eats away at your focus. You know that. You’re right. Okay. [Amara]
Good night. All crews in Wayne
Forest, come in. This is Captain
Roma Thompson. My brother’s out
there in this mess. If you see any signs
of him, call it in. [Roma]
It’s been too long. [plane motor in the distance] [Pilot on radio] Sorry to hear
it, Captain. On it. Appreciate it. Out. [plane motor]
Sounds like Roma. [Jessica and Buck]
Hey hey hey! -No!
-Come on! No! Sounded like it was Roma. We need to get to the radio. See if I can get her.
Come on! [Jessica]
Charlie! Charlie! Good boy. [Buck]
Ah! [Jessica] What? What’s wrong? The battery’s dead. [Buck shouts]
Come on! [Charlie whines] There’s no gas
in the generator. Okay, look. We’re safe. Okay? That’s all that matters
right now. Right? Right. You’re safe, I’m safe. Charlie’s safe. No way of sharing
that with anyone. What do we do now? The main road is
five hours away. But we both need some rest. Do we have time for that? Yeah, we do. The wind’s calming
down for the night. Besides if we don’t
rest, we’re gonna lag, and it’s going to take
us twice as long. I’m worried all that running
made your ribs worse. Not gonna lie. They do hurt. [Buck]
In that case… Instant ice pack. Thank you. And also, this. Remind me to thank whoever
packed that first aid kit. Probably Roma. She believes
chocolate is medicine. But… You can thank
me for this. Granny blanket? Uh huh. Funny story. I can’t wait. Not my Gran’s, mine. I met a girl, I
was a teenager. Everything was going great
and I decided to learn how to crochet to impress her. I feel like this somehow
doesn’t end in marriage. She said that was
the sweetest thing anyone’s ever
done for her. But? She said real men
don’t crochet and dropped me
like a hot potato. [laughs]
What? That’s probably why I
enlisted the next day. No. No. It was a few months later. Actually, my whole
family served. It’s great training to get
into emergency services. So you and your whole family
are in rescue services? Every one of us. Wow. You must all have
the angel gene. More like my Mom’s genes. What about you? Is there a fella
waitin’ on you? No. What about you? Is anyone worried about you? Just my sister Roma,
my cousin Amara, and probably my Mom. Amara come in. [Janine on the radio]
Hey. She’s tucked in
for some sleep. Mom? Just checking in. I buzzed the cabin. And? [Roma]
No sign of them. Appreciate you checking. I wish I had different news. I love you. Okay. You should
get some rest. I’ll take first watch. Okay. Just wake me
up in a few hours. -I can take second watch.
-That’s okay. I don’t sleep much anyway. Just a few hours
here and there. Because of the fire? No. It’s pretty much
every night. Do you want to
talk about it? No… Just, no. Okay. Hey Buck. Thank you. For everything. You should get some rest. [door closes] It’s just you and me, bud. We are thinking
of our neighbors directly north of us here. The evacuation zone
keeps getting bigger and folks from four more
towns will be moving out. Please be very careful
on the roads out there. We’ll have footage
for you at 11. [Amara] We are getting another
two hundred sandbags. Chief Janine will
run them up to you as soon as they’re available. [Fire Marshal on radio]
Appreciate it. You got it. Aunt Janine? Any word? No. He hasn’t contacted
me either. No one gives you a handbook
after they’re born. You get nine
months to prepare and then all of a
sudden you’re a mother. And the closest thing
you have to rules are the ones used on you. Right or wrong. Well Buck is the most
noble man I know. So whatever you and uncle
Walt did, you did it right. He used to be
afraid of the dark. He’d climb into bed with us after he thought
we’d fallen asleep. Walt was right. sometimes all you kids
need is a hug from Mom. No one knows this
land like Buck does. He will come back. And when he does, you can
give him a big hug and tell him all kinds
of mushy stuff. [chuckles and sobs]
I hope so. You can take him fishing,
cook your catch on the fire. I’ll make those chocolate
chip cookies you both like. You can arm wrestle
for the last one again. Okay, sounding weird when
you put it like that. He knows you love him. Really good work out
there, by the way, kiddo. I’m proud of you. I love you, too. [Charlie snuffling] I’m going to buy you
a toothbrush, buddy. Good morning. I’m glad you had
a good sleep because I’ve
been super busy. Ta da! Look! I realize that you were
trying to make a big… Remember when you
crammed a bunch of stuff into a pack at my lab while
you were saving my life? Thank you again
for that, because… You packed
my solar panel! Are you serious? We can radio for help? As soon as we get
enough juice in it. We can radio for help. Okay. What’s this? It’s a battery gauge. Once it’s full, we’ll
have enough power. Not bad. Not bad? You are a genius! Well, fixing things is my
way of fighting the man, thumbing my nose at
global corporations. They’ve managed to destroy
some of my favorite places but they won’t destroy me. So I do things my own way. That, and you can thank
a very under funded grant for keeping my
re-use skills sharp. Thank you, under
funded grant system, college for earth sciences. [they both laugh] Okay. So we just have to wait? Yeah, we just need enough… [together]
Power. Yes. Exactly. Buck, I need to thank
you for saving my drive. You literally saved my life.
And my work. You have no idea how
much this means to me. It’s important to you. Well, the fire is
still pretty far off. We got a little bit of time. That’s good. I mean it really shouldn’t
take long anyway. That’s great. How are your ribs?
By the way. Oh. Um, they’re still
sore but better, I think? Good. That’s good. Good. Yeah. Yeah. [beeping] Look at that! One bar! One bar! [Charlie huffs] [Charlie growls and barks] -[bear bellows]
-Oh no. Oh no. [bear growls] Stay. [bear huffing and snorting] [bear growls] [bear huffing] [Buck] Looks like a
three year old bear. Must have followed us
here from last night. [Charlie barks loudly] [whispers]
What do we do? [quietly] We’ll just have
to wait it out. [Fire Marshal]
Amara, come in. This is Amara. Go ahead. [Fire Marshal] We’re locked down
at the anchor point, but this wind is shifting
the spread north. Copy that. I’ll have Roma and her
team focus on the north. Stay safe. [bellows] [quietly]
It’s okay. It’s okay. [Charlie growls] [Jessica whispers] It’s okay
Charlie. It’s okay. [bear huffing]
[crashing sound] [Buck]
How’s the radio. Um… It’s still one bar. Maybe it moved on. [banging]
[Charlie barking] He wants the food in here! Get out the back.
Get Charlie and go! -I’m not leaving you!
-Jessica! [bear banging at door]
[bear bellowing] Hey! Hello! This is Jessica
Alaway and Buck Thompson! Can anyone hear me?
[sound of wood splintering] Can anyone hear me? [Jessica on radio] We’re at
Buck’s hunting lodge. Can anyone hear me? We’re at
Buck’s hunting lodge. Jessica, this is Amara.
Are you with Buck? Where are you? [Jessica]
Can anyone hear me? We’re at Buck’s hunting cabin.
Can anyone hear me? [banging] [Amara] Jessica! Jessica! I couldn’t get
their location. It’s the hunting cabin! It’s got to be the radio
at the hunting cabin. [Janine] Roma! You’ve got to get us
eyes on the cabin again. I’m low on fuel but I’ll
stay as long as I can. Have a helicopter standing
by for evacuation. Roma, we need clear
visual evidence of them before we can
authorize the chopper. Amara will know when
we can re-deploy. Understood. [Janine]
Over and out. [bear bellowing,
smashing at door] It’s now or never! [Charlie barking]
[bear smashing door] [Buck]
Go! [wood splintering, bear
bellowing] Charlie! Come! You’d better be
right behind me! [wood smashing] Charlie go! Charlie go! [wood splintering,
bear bellowing] Amara, are you still there?
Come back. Tell me you have good news. I wish I did. Is Buck… No sign of Buck
or Jessica. The place is torn apart.
Probably a bear. Are you saying… I don’t know. But I mean a bear would
only attack for food. So they must’ve been there. Listen, is Mom there? I’ll tell her. Thanks. Buck! Buck! Buck Buck!
Come on, come one. Get up! Get up! [Buck] Are you okay?
Is Charlie okay? I really think I should be
asking you that question. I’m no expert but I
think it’s the fire we need to outrun now! The wind’s changed
direction. We gotta get out of here.
Come on! Come on! Arrgghh. -What’s wrong?
-My leg. It’s definitely
a bad sprain. May be broken. We need a new plan. We’re not going
to outrun this. I can’t outrun this. There’s an abandoned lookout. It’s unmanned, but it might
have some old equipment. Okay. Okay. I got you. [both panting,
struggling in pain] [Jessica] Yes! Yes! Go! [Buck] Maybe there’s an
emergency pack. I think I can get this
going if there’s fuel! Ah! [Amara] We are almost
out of supplies. And I’ve called for back up,
but they will be fighting on their own for
a couple hours. We might not need it. Huh? [Janine]
Look up. Rain? [Janine]
Yes! And judging by that
cloud, lots of it. Whoo! Roma! [Roma]
No sign of them yet, Amara. I’ve circled back
for one last look but I have to go
back to re-fuel. Roma! Look! It’s just what we needed.
Thank the heavens. I have never been happier to
see rain in my entire life. [Buck] That rain isn’t going
to reach us in time. We have to try and
get to the river. Is there a path? There’s a clearing
over here. [ATV motor sputtering] Hopefully there’s a trail. [ATV motor sputtering] You know how to hot wire? Let’s just say I went
through a bit of a bad boy phase
in my teens. I don’t think I would have
been your type back then. Good thing I got
out of that phase. You saying you’d go
on a date with me? A little disclosure. I actually
thought this was a date. It’s probably the best one
I’ve been on in years. Wait till our second date. There’s a nice
little hurricane that I want to
take you to. [Jessica] You really know how
to spoil a girl. [Jessica coughs] [ATV motor starts] Yes! Yes! Yes! [motor sputters and stops] [Jessica]
It’s empty. What did you find? Flare gun. One flare. -[Jessica coughing]
-The smoke is too thick. I don’t hear
anybody out there. Jessica! Jessica! [tree cracking] Watch out! [cracking, smashing] [Charlie cries out] Charlie! Charlie! [Charlie whining and crying] Buck, Buck. It’s heavy. Buck you have to
help me, please! Buck! It’s too heavy! Please Buck! [Charlie whining] [Jessica]
What are you doing? [bombs going off]
[dog whining] It’s okay. You did a good job. You found that bomb before
anybody could get hurt. It’s okay. It’s okay. [Charlie crying] Buck? Please, what are you
doing? Please help me! Charlie needs you! It’s okay Charlie. It’s okay. -You ready?
-Yeah. [both struggle] -Jessica.
-What? You’re going to take this. You’re going to get
further from the fire. What? Charlie and I
can’t make it out. And I need you to be okay. No! I’m going to stay
with Charlie. He can’t walk and
I can’t carry him. No, I can’t. I can’t. No, I can’t. Hey. This has been the best first
date that I’ve ever had. Aside from the ending. Stop it! We can get out of this. We have to try.
We have to try. We have to figure it out… Go. Go. I’m not leaving you. [flare gun fires] [explosion] The battle’s not over yet,
but I think if we… Are you guys seeing this?
North northeast. Buck! I’ll drive over
and meet you there! [Roma]
No Mom. You stay put! It’s still too
dangerous! Okay? Roma, can you get to him? I’m 12 minutes out. [Amara on radio]
Too long. I’m on my way. Copy. Charlie’s mom was
our family dog. He’s been with me
his whole life. When I was in the
K-9 unit overseas I got really
close to them. It’s really hard to shake some of the things I
saw happen to them. Some of our bravest dogs. And some of our
bravest soldiers. [helicopter whirring] [Amara] I see a clearing.
