I tried living on a tiny remote Scottish island for 7 days. Scotland has many islands, especially on its western coastline. Trying Scottish island living has been something which has been on my bucket list for years so I decided to finally make it happen!
Join me as I head to the tiny Isle of Muck, one of The Small Isles and spend 7 days of simple living in a cute cottage and experience Scottish island life….

WHO AM I?
If we haven’t met before… Hi, I’m Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.

I hope you enjoy this video today and let me know if you could survive a week living on a tiny Scottish island!
That cow was saying “don’t get near my babies” I could tell by its stance. It didn’t want to hurt you, but wanted to give you fair warning.
a lot more Scots would live in the islands if they could afford to buy land and a house sadly that has not been possible for most people for decades and very little land isnt owned by a few billionaires
This is my dream. I could easily be on my own for a week. Would like to do the Outer Hebrides. i live in Canada and do similar stuff here. I would love to explore Scotland but do not think I could manage driving on the opposite side of the road. I need to find someone like you to show me around.
Yes, I live alone in a cabin on a mountain in the western edge of North Carolina In the United States. I see folks when I go in to the town for supplies, but I would enjoy that island, as I have enjoyed living on an island before. Up in Alaska. You are such a nice person to listen to and to share the adventures you go on . Thank you for that and your kind smiles as you travel. Smiling, George.
I enjoy your personality. I am from California. My Father was from Port Glasgow.
It looks like you had a better experience on Muck than you did on St. Kilda! The cottage looks so nice and cosy.
A swim? That's brass monkey water.
The old style. Shower head. Took me back to bath nights on a Sunday before school😂
Loved this trip thanks for sharing. ❤
Ruth, the amount of food you showed was ridiculous. Don't be stupid.
I only just discovered you and you do such beautiful filming. I look forward to seeing more of your filming.
Thank you for your video! That was so funny when you said 😂 you were going to get charged up by the cow.
Found your channel a week ago and have been watching 3 or 4 films a day since. You may have covered this already but could do a short history of why you returned from Japan, getting Ernie and what your plans are for the next several years or if you've done this already where would I find it? Or I suppose I could be systematic and start from the first one it's just I keep getting recommendations which lure me away from the start. I'd have got a big bottle of whiskey I bet it would be cheaper and carried the balance off at the end of the week or left it for the next guest.
Nice pad out in the middle of nowhere! 😙✌
I can't tell you, how much I appreciate your videos, thank you, lovely xxx
Hi Ruth, what a charming wee cottage, I could see myself there just chilling out for a week. The Starlink equipment looks like a great addition. Boy, I remember those shower attachment things from when I was a child in the late 60s. My mum would buy them from the Betterware man that came door to door and they were replaced quite often as not made to last! I have memories of the hot pipe slipping off during my shower and getting frozen in the spot lol!
Fantastic video, really enjoyed this one! Thanks for sharing!👍👏👏♥️🏴
Loved the video Ruth, what an amazing place, one Scottish island I have always wanted to visit is the Isle of Barra.😊
38 people in the whole island? sounds like heaven! count me in!!
Cow just glad to see you.
I am an only child so I am used to being by myself, although I don’t always like being by myself, but I could easily stay in this cottage as long as I was not cold because I do not like being cold.
I have a pronunciation correction for you. Porpoises is not pronounced the way it looks like pot poi see. You don’t worry about the “oi”.
You say Por puss and you don’t say poor poises so I just thought you’d like to know.
In 😍
so jealous i would of loved to of taken my photography gear up there!
These videos make me sooo old and I am not even fifty! Great work and great videos. Keep up the great work. Also, love the classic combo of a red coat and cows… maybe better not to take a red rag to a cow LOL
Yes 💯. I'd move in tomorrow if I could
I know ive seen this vid before, but it came up on my feed, I do intend to do a week as well, this trip is amazing, no cruise ports with thousands, expensive dining, this is a real experience and every time you do it I know its always different, Im planning next year now:)
whisky samples of course of course
I have to be totally honest, Ive lived over half my life abroad, and I have only found separate taps (faucets) in the UK and Hong Kong loloool
I want to take this cottage for a week
baby calves lololo
❤❤❤luv your videos
Your meals are so small… how do you survive?! Love your vids, thanks!
All our taps used to be like that. When I was a small child hair was washed over the big butler sink using bowls and saucepans. Then we moved and we had a bathroom with a bath and a separate toilet inside. But we still didn’t have a mixer tap. Then my brother fitted new taps and shower. We had entered the modern age and I was twelve.
A week there? Yes please. Hike every day. Cook every afternoon. Chill and read every night.
Great vid, you really make the Scottish Islands very appealing
That is not a real taco
😂
I would love to stay there! I once rented a tiny house on the Mendocino coast for a week. The drive up alone was the hardest part, some wild winding cliff edge roads in a rental car! I had a great time but had to plan something for every day. I did yoga outside on the deck and when it was calm one day I went to the beach and brought my watercolors. I collected seaweed and shells and driftwood and used them as models to paint using seawater, the salt made an interesting look once dried. I read a lot, brought a tiny speaker so I had music when I cooked and had a silly solo dance party one night.
I would love a trip there! I wouldn’t mind the solitude, but I usually travel with my husband and our grown son. Either way, it would be a wonderful adventure. Thank you for showing us around! 😊
Change your COAT! The RED COLOR attracts some animals!!
You ar absolutely brilliant
I wonder how one goes about becoming resident of Muck
Canadian but have Irish and Scottish Ancestry so interesting ! Tuned in from Ontario. 🇨🇦
